Conclusions: Some Thoughts on Classroom Testing for English. English Language Assessment In the Classroom (1998), available at: .1. Field of the Invention
The present invention relates generally to impulse stimulation of a device, and more particularly to such stimulation which may include pulses of a range of frequencies.
2. Description of the Prior Art
Impulse stimulation of devices has been used for decades in many forms, and particularly in the stimulation of a subject’s nervous system to achieve analgesia, sedation, or anesthesia. It is known that such stimulation may be achieved by providing a periodic signal to the subject for a period of time that is too brief to perceptibly transmit nerve impulses, which signal may then stimulate the target nerve fibers.
The prior art often mentions the use of either ‘pulse width’, or ‘duty cycle’, as a factor used in selecting the stimulation pulses. As used herein, the term ‘pulse width’ shall mean the time for a pulse as measured from a first point in time to a second point in time, and including all points in between. The term ‘duty cycle’ as used herein shall mean the ratio of the pulse width to the period of time over which the pulses occur. A ‘period’ of time may be understood as the beginning point of the pulse to the ending point of the pulse. Thus, when a pulse has a duty cycle of 60% (on time of 40%, off time of 60%), the pulse is on for 40% of the period of time, and off for the remaining 60% of the period of time.
It has long been considered desirable to use a single pulse frequency for each of the pulses in a sequence of pulses used to stimulate a nerve, since nerves can respond to input at a variety of different pulse frequencies. Generally, both the amplitude and pulse frequency are modulated or varied in a period of time on a pulse-to-pulse basis. In many cases, the human nervous system is most responsive to a change in pulse frequency, and it is also more likely that significant physiological effects will occur during the on time portion of the pulses. Since an average human being typically experiences approximately six to ten such pulse changes per second of stimulation (i.e. for each 1 KHz change in pulse frequency, there is approximately a 6
